The Harned Family | Topsail Island, North Carolina

When most people imagine a family photography session, they picture the evening itself.
They picture walking onto the beach as the sun begins to sink lower in the sky. They picture children laughing, waves rolling onto shore, and the photographs that will eventually hang on the walls of their home.
But what many people don’t realize is that some of the most meaningful parts of a session happen long before anyone ever steps onto the sand.
When the Harned family reached out to me, their vacation was only days away. Their family was gathering on Topsail Island, hoping to preserve this beautiful season of life while everyone was together.
There wasn’t much time.
But there was enough time to do what matters most.

Before their session was officially booked, we met for a planning consultation.
That conversation is one of my favorite parts of the Sage Willow experience because it isn’t really about photography at all. It’s about people.
It’s where I learn who will be standing in front of my camera. It’s where I hear about the newest chapters unfolding within a family, the relationships that have grown, the children who have changed, and the little details that make every family beautifully unique.

It’s also where we thoughtfully plan everything together—from wardrobe and timing to the flow of the evening—so that when session day arrives, there is nothing left to worry about.
By the time we finally meet in person, we’re no longer strangers.
We’re simply continuing a conversation we’ve already begun.

Of course, Mother Nature had plans of her own.
The week brought one summer storm after another, making our original session date impossible. Thankfully, we’d already chosen a backup date during the planning process, allowing us to simply shift our evening instead of wondering what came next.
When our backup evening arrived, the skies settled, the waves rolled onto shore, and three generations stepped onto the beach together.
Because we’d already talked through every detail beforehand, there was nothing left to figure out. The evening unfolded naturally.
Grandparents stood surrounded by the family they’d spent a lifetime building. Grown children laughed together. And the youngest member of the family wandered barefoot through the sand, happily becoming the center of everyone’s attention without even realizing it.
Those are the moments I find myself quietly watching.
The ones that can’t be posed.
The ones that happen when people stop thinking about photographs and simply enjoy being together.

As the sun disappeared below the horizon and we made our way back toward their beach house, it was just my client, her little boy, and me.
Since she calls Virginia home and I grew up there myself, it was fun swapping stories about a place we both know so well. We laughed about how much has changed over the years, shared memories of familiar places, and enjoyed one last conversation before saying our goodbyes.
It’s one of the unexpected gifts this work has given me.
Photography has introduced me to people I never would have met otherwise, yet somehow our stories often find little places where they overlap.
By the end of the evening, it no longer felt like I’d simply photographed a family visiting Topsail Island.
It felt like I’d spent the evening preserving a chapter in their story.

One day, this little boy will be taller than his mother. Family vacations will look different. Conversations will change. New chapters will begin, just as they always do.
When that day comes, these photographs won’t simply remind the Harned family of what this season looked like.
They’ll remind them of how it felt.
The warm sand beneath their feet.
The sound of the waves as the sun slipped below the horizon.
The laughter they shared on an ordinary summer evening that quietly became part of their family’s story.
Because that’s the beautiful thing about ordinary moments.
We rarely realize how extraordinary they are until they’ve become memories.
