Kendra’s Senior Session Along Topsail Island & Surf City

Seniors, The Senior Session Experience

When Kendra and I first sat down together nearly two months before her senior session, she didn’t arrive with every detail already figured out.

She wasn’t completely sure what she wanted to wear. She didn’t have every location mapped out or every photograph imagined in her mind.

She simply knew she wanted her senior session to feel like her.

And honestly…That’s exactly where I love to begin.

Because I don’t believe the best senior sessions start when the camera comes out. I believe they begin with a conversation.

Before we ever choose outfits, before we chase beautiful light, before we step onto the beach, I want to know you.

What makes you feel most like yourself?

What parts of your story deserve to be remembered?

What season of life are we celebrating together?

That’s where Kendra’s story began.

Together, we began designing a senior session that reflected who Kendra already was—not who she thought she needed to be in front of a camera.

We knew we wanted to celebrate the years she had devoted to competitive cheer. We envisioned a quiet green space, the charm of Surf City, and an evening that would end with the sound of the waves along Topsail Island. Once we had created the foundation for her session, everything else began to fall into place. Kendra thoughtfully selected outfits that complemented each location, and by the time session day arrived, there were no last-minute decisions to make.

There was only the excitement of finally bringing her story to life.

That kind of preparation is intentional.

When every detail has already been thoughtfully planned, you’re free to stop worrying about the logistics and simply enjoy the experience. You aren’t wondering where you’re going next or whether you packed the right outfit. You aren’t trying to figure out how to pose or hoping you look natural in front of the camera.

You get to be fully present.

And that’s where the magic lives.

Of course, there were still a few butterflies when the evening began.

There almost always are.

Very few seniors step in front of a professional camera feeling completely relaxed, and Kendra was no different. Like so many seniors, she started the evening a little nervous.

That’s okay.

You don’t have to know how to pose.
You don’t have to know what to do with your hands.
You don’t have to know how to create beautiful photographs.

That’s never been your job.

It’s mine.

As we made our way through each location, those first few nervous moments slowly melted away. There was laughter, conversation, quiet encouragement, and little by little, Kendra stopped thinking about the camera altogether. By the time we reached Surf City and eventually the shoreline of Topsail Island, she had settled into the moment.

She wasn’t trying to create the perfect photograph anymore.

She was simply enjoying her senior year.

Those are always my favorite moments.

Earlier that afternoon, storms rolled through the area, and for a while we weren’t sure if the weather would cooperate. But just before her session began, the clouds parted and the sun found us. Later, as we arrived at the beach, the clouds returned and wrapped the shoreline in soft, dreamy light.

It wasn’t the evening we originally imagined.

It was even better.

One of my favorite parts of Kendra’s session wasn’t captured in a single photograph.

It was the people who walked beside her throughout the evening.

Her grandmother.

Her mom.

Her sister.

A close family friend.

They helped with outfit changes, cheered her on, celebrated every new location, and laughed alongside us as the evening unfolded. Their encouragement filled every part of the session, and before we knew it, those quiet moments naturally became part of Kendra’s story, too. We even paused to capture a few photographs together—small moments I’m sure they’ll treasure for years to come.

Because a senior session isn’t just about celebrating graduation.

It’s about celebrating the people who helped you become who you are.

When people ask what makes the Signature Senior Session Experience different, this is what I hope they understand.

It isn’t simply about beautiful locations.

Or carefully chosen outfits.

Or even the photographs themselves.

It’s about knowing that by the time your session arrives, someone already knows your story.

Someone has listened.

Someone has helped bring your ideas to life.

Someone has carefully designed an experience that feels uniquely yours, so all that’s left for you to do is show up, take a deep breath, and trust the process.

Because when you let go of the pressure to be perfect…

Something far more beautiful happens.

You begin to look like yourself.

And those are the photographs you’ll treasure for the rest of your life.

Kendra, thank you for trusting me with such an important season of your life. It was a joy getting to know you, creating this experience alongside you, and celebrating everything that makes your story uniquely yours. I can’t wait to see all the places life takes you after graduation, and I hope these photographs always bring you back to this beautiful season whenever you look through them.
